USA, Caribbean islands, states of Tamaulipas, Veracruz and Yucatan in Mexico, northern coastal area of Colombia and Venezuela, Pantanal area in Brazil and Paraguay.

Inflorescence racemose or paniculate, of 3 - 8 whorls, 6 - 22 flowers each, prostrate, protruding leaves, multiplying, up to 75 cm long, up to 45 cm wide, rachis round to triangular in cross section, stems round, up to 85 cm long, 5 mm in diameter, bracts free, lanceolate, coarse with membranous edge, shorter than the flower stalks underneath, 1 – 5 cm long, 2 – 5 mm wide, 9 – 16 veins, tip pointed, flower and fruit stalks spread out, round, 3 – 7.5 cm long, 1 mm diameter. Flowers 2 - 3.5 cm in diameter, sepals and petals spread out, sepals 10 - 20-veined, approx. 5 mm long, approx. 5 mm wide, veins with or without papillae, petals white, without claws, overlapping, approx. 13 cm long, approx. 14 mm wide, stamens 15 – 28, anthers versatile, approx. 1.5 mm long, filaments c. 2 mm long, carpels numerous
