Echinodorus barthii, scientific name Echinodorus x barthii. It was first commercialized in 1984 under the trade name Echinodorus osiris red-leaved. However, Dr. Helmut Mühlberg of the University of Halle-Wittenberg later determined that it was actually a hybrid that did not occur in nature. He gave it a new name, which has become accepted in aquaristics, after the Dessau tropical plant breeder Hans Barth. According to the 2011 DNA analysis of this plant, it is a hybrid between one of the varieties of Echinodorus uruguayensis in the seed section and Echinodorus maculatus in the pollen section. Echinodorus barthii forms small clumps 10-20 cm tall and 20-40 cm wide. The submerged leaves, arranged in a rosette, are narrowly elliptic with elongated petioles. The young leaves develop a deep, dark red-brown color. The coloration may persist in the older leaves. Leaf laminae are usually curled at the edges. Excellent for most tropical freshwater aquariums. Generally used as a middle ground, providing a nice contrast to the general green background. Successful cultivation is possible in mixed soil (coarse sand and fine gravel) with a thickness of at least 4-5 cm, it is recommended to use root food, especially in a young aquarium. Lighting is bright, the stronger it is, the darker and stronger the color of the leaves.
