Origin / Breeder : Hans Barth, Dessau [1]

Echinodorus Indian Red, a cross between Echinodorus aschersonianus and Echinodorus uruguayensis[1]. In the aquarium, the coloration of the leaves ranges from light reddish brown to dark red, depending on the light intensity; in low light they turn green. The upper part of the underwater leaf is slightly twisted. A characteristic feature of this ornamental variety is the slightly wavy edge of the leaf blade. The underwater leaves are narrowly elliptical in shape and up to 20 x 4 cm in size. With a height of 10 - 20 cm, it is also suitable for greening smaller aquariums.[2]

Echinodorus Indian Red is a rarer species with light green leaves and red markings. Like most sword plants, it should be planted directly in the substrate. When using inert substrates such as sand or gravel, it is important to supplement the plants with root fertilizer, as Echinodorus are strong root eaters. The plant can be grown both emersed and submerged and new leaves can often grow above the water line. Overall, this plant is easy and undemanding and is very suitable for larger aquariums.
