Echinodorus maculatus, previously commercially available under various other names, was not scientifically defined until 2006 by botanist Somogyi. Because of its adaptability, the plant likes to get a foothold in the aquarium. Initially known as Echinodorus schlueteri, other names such as Echinodorus Asperus and [[Echinodorus aschersonianus Rubromaculatus|Echinodorus aschersonianus Rubromaculatus] appeared in the trade over time. Common German synonyms today are still Gefleckte Schwertpflanze and Schlueter's Froschlöffel .
To avoid confusion of names and species, a scientific description of the previous Echinodorus schlueteri was made on the part of SOMOGYI(2006) , and a renaming of the same to Echinodorus maculatus took place. As stated by Somogyi, Echinodorus schlueteri is a small form of Echinodorus cordifolius also known under the name Echinodorus cordifolius mini.
