heterotypic synonym of: Echinodorus uruguayensis Arechav.

Echinodorus Porto Alegre, scientific name Echinodorus portoalegrensis. This species is native to south-eastern Brazil, where the plant grows in cool, fast-flowing rivers and streams. The first specimens were collected in 1970 by botanist Karel Rataj in the state of Santa Catarina and is named after the large port city of Porto Alegre. According to the results of a study carried out in 2011, this species is a natural hybrid, i.e. it originated in nature from Echinodorus grandiflorus and Echinodorus longiscapus. The plant has dense dark green lanceolate leaves, and the leaf blade and petiole are strongly curved both along the axis and transversely. In height it reaches up to 15 cm and in width 10 to 30 cm, outwardly it resembles dark Echinodorus (Echinodorus opacus) and they are often confused, but this does not cause any particular problems as they grow in similar conditions. A lot of free space is needed for normal growth. The typical ratio is one sprout per 60 liters. Although Echinodorus Porto Alegre is not fussy about light levels and temperature conditions, it is very sensitive to the quality and hydrochemical composition of the water. Keep pH and dGH values low and ensure good filtration. In an aquarium with fish, it is not necessary to add additional fertilizers to the soil.[1]
